// The challenge

Freelance journalism still runs on the cold pitch. A reporter emails an editor they hope is still in the job, attaches clips hosted on a site that may not exist next year, and waits. Newsrooms have the mirror problem: when they need a data journalist in Berlin or an investigative reporter in Madrid by Friday, they fall back on the same handful of contacts they already have.

Neither side has a shared, verifiable record to work from. Bylines sit scattered across publications, and nothing connects a claimed beat to work actually filed. The hiring decision gets made on the strength of a pitch email rather than on the track record behind it.

// What we built

Presswire is two products built against one API.

Journalists get a profile that carries their beats, languages, location and published work — articles written on the platform itself or linked from elsewhere — alongside a dashboard tracking every candidature they have sent and its live status: pending, reviewing, accepted.

Newsrooms get the other half. A mission composer covering assignment type, budget range and currency, location, remote flag, application deadline and required skills. A board of their open missions with application counts. And a review queue where each candidature arrives with the journalist's cover note and full profile attached, ready to accept or reject without leaving the page.

The front end is Next.js on the App Router, styled with hand-written CSS modules rather than a utility framework, and typeset in Libre Franklin with IBM Plex Mono carrying the uppercase metadata rails that run through the interface. It talks to a NestJS API over JWT. Both sides ship in English and French from the same routes.

// The outcome

Presswire is live at presswire.info with both halves of the marketplace shipped: profile building and mission applications on the journalist side, mission posting and candidature review on the newsroom side.

The verification-first model is what the build argues for. A newsroom filling a role reads a track record instead of a pitch, and a reporter applies once from a profile that already carries the evidence — rather than reassembling the case in every cold email.
